"Some animals quietly become part of your family. Others arrive determined to become part of everyone else's as well."
By the time Milly and Jasmine had settled into family life, Sarah thought she had a fairly good understanding of how her household worked. There was Chloe, the gentle soul who seemed happiest when everyone else was happy. Milly, who had appointed herself Head of Supervision and could oversee an entire day's activities without breaking a sweat. Jasmine, who continued to believe affection should be earned and conversation carefully rationed.
Life felt... organised.
Predictable.
Comfortable.
Then Fudge arrived.
And predictable quietly packed its bags and left.
A Dog Who Belonged Everywhere
Fudge was a black Kelpie cross with a bright white blaze on her chest, endless enthusiasm and absolutely no concept of staying where she'd been put. Some dogs explore the backyard. Fudge explored the neighbourhood. She wasn't trying to run away. She simply seemed convinced the entire suburb was an extension of home. Every gate looked like an invitation. Every open door was a possibility. Every stranger was simply a friend she hadn't officially met yet.
Sarah soon discovered that owning Fudge meant becoming very familiar with one particular phrase. "I think we've found your dog..."
The Telephone Calls
The calls became legendary.
"She's down at football training."
"She's wandered into the park."
"I think she's helping herself to a visit around the shops."
There was never panic in anyone's voice. Usually amusement. Sometimes laughter.
Because by the time they called, Fudge had already introduced herself, accepted several pats and made herself completely at home. Eventually half the community seemed to know her by name.
Sarah sometimes suspected Fudge had a more active social life than she did.
Dinner Invitations
One evening the phone rang much later than usual. The gentleman on the other end sounded almost embarrassed.
"I hope you don't mind," he said. "We've got an extra guest for dinner."
Two elderly gentlemen had been enjoying a quiet evening meal when Fudge wandered into their house. Rather than showing herself back out...She accepted the invitation to stay.
Dinner was served. Conversation was enjoyed. The unexpected visitor behaved as though she'd been expected all along.
Sarah often wondered who enjoyed the evening more.
The gentlemen...Or Fudge. Knowing Fudge...
She probably assumed she'd be invited back next Thursday.
The Preschool Artist
Then there was the day she came home with a pink tail. Not slightly pink. Completely pink.
For a few bewildering moments Sarah wondered whether she'd somehow rescued an entirely different dog. Eventually the mystery unravelled. Fudge had wandered into the local preschool. Made friends with every child. Joined in painting time. And somehow become part of the day's activities. The children thought it was wonderful.
The teachers eventually found Sarah. Fudge proudly wore her colourful masterpiece all the way home. Fortunately...The paint washed off.
The story never did.
"Coming?"
Every explorer wants company. Fudge spent years trying to recruit Milly.
Every escape began with the same hopeful enthusiasm. "Coming?"
Milly would glance towards the gate. Glance back at Sarah. Consider the proposal carefully. Then quietly return to supervising from a sensible distance.
Fudge chased adventures. Milly preferred risk assessments.
Together...
They somehow balanced each other perfectly.
The Dog Everybody Claimed
Most families have one dog. Sarah often joked that Fudge belonged to the whole community. The football club knew her. The preschool knew her. The local shops knew her. The elderly gentlemen certainly knew her. She collected people the way other dogs collected tennis balls.
Everywhere she went...
Someone had a Fudge story.
What Fudge Taught Sarah
Looking back now, Sarah realises Fudge changed more than just the rhythm of the household. She changed the way Sarah looked at the world. Fudge assumed people were kind until proven otherwise. She greeted every day like an adventure waiting to happen. She never worried about tomorrow. She simply wanted to see what today might bring. Sometimes that was a walk. Sometimes it was football training.
Sometimes...
It was dinner with strangers.
Another Paw Print
Jack had taught Sarah loyalty. Chloe had shown her gentleness.
Milly reminded her that not every job required actual effort.
Jasmine proved affection meant more when it was earned.
Fudge brought something entirely different. She filled the family with stories. Stories that still make people laugh years later. Stories that remind Sarah that life is usually at its best when it refuses to go according to plan.
Some dogs leave paw prints. Fudge left adventures.
And somehow...
She was only just getting started.
