"Not every pet spends every moment at your side. Some simply make sure they always find their way home."
When Summer and Salty first arrived at the old country house, they didn't need to be taught how to be country cats.
Somehow...They already knew. Perhaps it was instinct. Perhaps it was simply the promise of open fields, ancient trees and endless places waiting to be explored.
Whatever it was...
It suited them perfectly.
Children of the Countryside
Every morning followed much the same routine. Breakfast would disappear in record time. The back door would open.
And just like that...They were gone. Not running away. Simply heading off to inspect their kingdom. The gardens. The paddocks. The stone walls warmed by the morning sun. The hedgerows buzzing with birds and insects.
There were mice to stalk. Butterflies to chase. Trees to climb.
Guests arriving with interesting luggage to quietly observe from a respectable distance.
The world beyond the doorstep was far too interesting to spend indoors.
The Warmest Seat in the House
Yet no matter how adventurous the day had been… Evening always arrived the same way.
Two little grey figures would appear from somewhere beyond the gardens. Sometimes muddy. Sometimes carrying evidence of a successful day's hunting. Sometimes pretending they'd only been gone for five minutes instead of five hours.
They would stroll through the back door with complete confidence...
As though they'd been doing Lara a favour by allowing her a little peace and quiet.
Then came dinner. Which they accepted with the unmistakable expression of cats who had clearly been neglected for days. And once their performance was complete...
They claimed the best seats in the house. The hearth. Directly in front of the fire.
Where they stretched themselves across the warm stone floor as though no one else had any legitimate claim to it.
Independent... But Never Distant
People sometimes imagine independent cats don't form close bonds with their families. Summer and Salty quietly proved otherwise. They didn't follow Lara from room to room. They weren't constantly asking for attention. Their love wasn't loud. It was quieter than that. It was found in familiar routines. The gentle greeting at the back door. The soft weight of two sleeping cats beside the fire.
The quiet reassurance that no matter how far they'd wandered...
Home was exactly where they wanted to be.
Masters of Their Domain
As the months passed, Summer and Salty became woven into the rhythm of country life.
Guests soon learned they were only visiting. The cats owned the estate. They inspected every new arrival. Supervised gardeners from nearby stone walls. Appeared unexpectedly in photographs. Accepted admiration when it suited them. Ignored it when it didn't.
They were elegant.
Independent.
Entirely self-appointed custodians of the grounds.
What Summer and Salty Taught Lara
Watching them, Lara discovered something she hadn't expected. Love doesn't always look like constant companionship.
Sometimes...Love is trust. Trusting someone enough to disappear all day...Knowing they'll still be there when you come home. Summer and Salty lived wonderfully independent lives.
Yet every evening, they chose the same place. The same fire. The same home. The same people.
Not because they had to. Because they wanted to.
The First Paw Prints in England
While Sarah's dogs were teaching her about loyalty on the other side of the world...
Summer and Salty were quietly teaching Lara something different. That home isn't somewhere you're kept. It's somewhere you choose to return to.
Every single day.
Those two little grey kittens became the first paw prints on Lara's own rescue journey.
The first of many animals who would wander into her life...
Leave it forever changed...
And unknowingly help write the story that would one day become Paw Print Society.
