Chapter 8. Meet Tilly and Alfie

Chapter 8. Meet Tilly and Alfie

"Some dogs aren't bad at their job. They're simply working towards a different promotion."

By now, Summer and Salty had firmly established themselves as custodians of the old country house. The hearth belonged to them. The gardens belonged to them. Quite possibly...The guests did too.

Life settled into a peaceful rhythm. Until Lara visited another rescue charity. This one specialised in finding homes for working dogs who, for one reason or another, hadn't quite lived up to expectations.

At least...That was the official description.

Lara soon suspected the dogs simply hadn't read the job description.

Another Brother and Sister

Just like Summer and Salty before them...

These rescues arrived as another brother and sister.

Tilly. And Alfie.

Two Springer Spaniels with boundless enthusiasm and completely different ideas about how life should be lived. They may have shared the same litter...

But that was about where the similarities ended.

Alfie's Calling

If Alfie had been asked what career he'd chosen...

The answer was obvious. Professional Ball Retriever. Water Specialist.

Every walk began with one hopeful glance. "Did anyone remember the ball?"

If the answer was yes...

Life was perfect. Canals became playgrounds. Streams became obstacle courses. Puddles deserved investigation. Lakes demanded immediate entry.

If water existed...

Alfie intended to be in it. Usually with a tennis ball. Quite often dripping enthusiastically over anyone standing nearby.

Working dog?

Perhaps.

But only if the work involved swimming after things.

Tilly's Mission

Tilly had absolutely no interest in tennis balls. She had a nose. And she trusted it completely. Every scent deserved investigating. Every hedge concealed important information. Every woodland path contained a thousand fascinating stories that only she seemed capable of reading.

Very quickly, Lara realised something. Alfie could be trusted off lead. Tilly… Absolutely could not.

The moment her lead came unclipped, Tilly transformed into an elite marathon runner. There was no warning. No dramatic pause. Just...Gone. Head down. Nose working. Charging confidently towards an adventure known only to herself. Somewhere in Tilly's mind, there was always an important race taking place.

No one else had entered.

But that didn't stop her trying to win it.

The English Way

Walks soon became one of life's greatest pleasures. Across open fields. Along quiet canals.

Over ancient wooden stiles polished smooth by generations of walkers before them. Alfie charging joyfully between ball and owner. Tilly sniffing every inch of the countryside with unwavering determination. On warm summer afternoons… The route often included a stop at the local village pub.

Dogs sprawled beneath wooden tables. Boots muddy from the fields. A quick pint in the sunshine. Then everyone wandered happily home again. It was an ordinary tradition.

Which, of course...Made it unforgettable.

Different Jobs

Looking back, Lara often smiled at the thought that someone had once decided these two weren't suitable working dogs.

They were working all the time. Alfie's job was making people laugh. Tilly's was ensuring no interesting smell went unnoticed.

Neither took a single day off.

What Tilly and Alfie Taught Lara

Every rescue arrives carrying a story someone else couldn't finish. Tilly and Alfie taught Lara that sometimes all an animal needs isn't different training.

It's different expectations. Nobody asked Alfie to stop loving water. Nobody expected Tilly to ignore her nose.

Instead...

They were simply allowed to become exactly who they already were.

And in return...

They became exactly the dogs they were always meant to be.

The Story Grows

Summer and Salty had introduced Lara to country life. Tilly and Alfie filled it with movement.

Muddy paw prints appeared across old stone floors. Wet Spaniel ears decorated freshly washed clothes.

The peaceful country house became just a little noisier. Just a little muddier. And infinitely happier. The rescue family was growing.

One wonderfully imperfect animal at a time.
