He was arrested. It felt as though the story was finally reaching its conclusion. What happened next, however...Was something Sarah never could have predicted.
The Thing He Remembered Most
During questioning, the man admitted he remembered the house. Not because of the robbery. Not because he'd been caught. Not because of the backpack.
No.
The thing that had stayed with him most was something entirely different."That house...It had the friendliest Staffies." Out of everything that had happened...
That was the memory he carried away.
Security According to Jack & Chloe
Looking back now, Sarah can almost picture the whole scene. Someone climbs the fence. Jack appears first. Tail wagging furiously.
"Hello! You're new!"
A few seconds later, Chloe arrives.Calmly assessing the situation.
"Excellent.Would you like the grand tour?"
Had either of them possessed opposable thumbs...They probably would have helped carry the television to the car.
They Saw the Best in Everyone
That's the remarkable thing about dogs. They don't begin by assuming the worst. Jack and Chloe believed every person deserved a happy greeting. A wagging tail. A chance to become a friend. Even after everything that happened...
Sarah never wished they were different. Their kindness wasn't naïve. It was simply who they were. And perhaps the world needs a few more souls like that.

But strangely...It isn't the stolen belongings Sarah remembers most. It's the burglar's unexpected confession. Because even someone who had made terrible choices couldn't forget meeting two dogs who believed he deserved a friendly welcome.
Looking back now...
Sarah realises they weren't protecting the house. They were protecting something far more precious. The belief that kindness should always be offered first.
It's a lesson the world could probably use a little more often.
